Episode 86 Joni Mitchell and Gershwin, a little this/that

Three good ones from Joni today. Her PBS tribute is March 31st at 8 central time. She recently was honored to receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Mad Dogs are loose on the street today and I can only hope you’ll like my song choice today from some of the best LPs of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Thanks for your donations to the show and to RadioFreeNashville.org.

Episode 85 Going back to Eps 18 & 19 before RadioFreeNashville

Many of the great LP cuts from the 60s and 70s were played here on Tales Vinyl Tells, hosted on StudioMillsWellness.com, before March 2022 when Tales Vinyl Tells got an hour slot on Wednesdays at 5 central time on RadioFreeNashville to carry on with the mission. Since my goal was and remains to not repeat too many tunes, except for replays of course, there are some killers that need to be repeated. Like, Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock. I love to hear Grace announce early that Sunday morning in 1969, “You’ve heard the heavy groups, now you’ll hear morning maniac music. Yeh, it’s a New Dawn……. Good morning, People!” and the Airplane launches into Volunteers (of America). Like, Joe Walsh and the James Gang, Thunderclap Newman and Revolution. Those last two were the first two played as a great progressive album rock radio station went on-air at Lake Worth beach, Florida in 1970 (?). That being WMUM-FM, lovingly known as Mother. And it was one. I loved my Mother and the people there that made it happen. Kerry Bogard, Pat Sullender, Bill Davis, Gil Colquitt(RIP), Galen Barker, Michael Weber, Tom Lane and the first guy on the air, Geoff Fox.  If you listen to the Bill Davis interview, you'll hear how someone I know closely played Whole Lotta Love way before WMUM was born. (Smile)

Hope you enjoy all of them here. You can reach out to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. The month of March I celebrate another year at RadioFreeNashville. 2023 is one year.

Episode 83 Canadian Artists who influenced American ears

Many great artists, musical, theatrical, scientific and in other fields have made big marks in what we do here south of the border that we share. This is the first part of the series that brings out some of those great musicians who have made us smile, sing, dance, hug, kiss, you know. The musical list is quite long so I’ve chosen what I think should be played on such a classy show as Tales Vinyl Tells. I’ve warned you to not be surprised what you hear here, so let’s take off. The Guess Who, Lightfoot, Cohen, Adams, Mitchell, The Band are some who you’ll hear in the next two episodes.

RadioFreeNashville is community supported and your support is so appreciated. Learn more and check out the programming at RadioFreeNashville.org.

Episode 82 Valentine's Day Love Songs: Pure Prairie League, Sade, Stones and more

We go back to a Love episode, in fact it’s #17, from August 2020. That was a time before Tales Vinyl Tells became a weekly radio show on RadioFreeNashville. You’ll hear here Janis, Sade, JJ Cale, Arthur Lee and Love (they are really good and have 2 tunes today) and there’s more. If you like what RadioFreeNashville does, thank you, and consider making a donation or give monthly. Hope your Valentine likes this edition of TVT.

Episode 81 Celebrating Black History Month

February is Black History Month and this hour is a retelling of our episode 12 from June 2020. James Brown, Aretha, and Gary Clark, Jr. are just a few of the artists here. Hope your winter is going well and the new year will improve as it progresses.
This episode is to air 2/15/23 at 5 Central on RadioFreeNashville.org and here. You might hear us around Nashville at 103.7 and 107.1 FM.

Episode 80 David Crosby's Music Replay from Feb 1, '23 RadioFreeNashville

The icons of the sixties are physically leaving us, one by one. My intentions are to keep their music alive. The music of the 60s especially was unique and many of the albums that contained those tunes have endured a half century or more, just begging to jump onto a turntable so the stylus can be gently placed into the endless groove and be played and appreciated. Or hated. There are so many songs I despise, even though they were great, they got overplayed on commercial radio. I’m trying very diligently to hold off on repeating any songs, though I feel some are so worth repeating. This is probably the 4th time I’ve played Wooden Ships but why not with such a great tune with Stephen Stills’ signature guitar solo and great lyrics that make you wonder about so much. I give this hour to Croz and encourage you to explore his compositions and especially his latest works, solo and with his son, James Raymond, guitarist Jeff Pevar in the group CPR. Enjoy!

I’m digging’ listening to the early podcasts!

Episode 79 Jeff Beck tribute and a few others

What a down year this has started out to be. Jeff Beck now David Crosby. Rock photographer Henry Diltz said: “Our old friend David Crosby walked into the next room today. Imagine what he's seeing right this minute. We can only guess, but they say it's pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing him on the other side”. Can you dig what Beck and DC just might be up to?The year is gonna get better, I do believe.

So lets get down to business. Jeff Beck’s imaginative and innovative guitar work spilled all over rock, blues and jazz worlds since he played with The Yardbirds as early at 1965. “‘Cause we’ve ended as lovers” is sultry, Goin down rocks the house. Great stuff here today! This hour hasn’t even hit the airways yet. That’ll be Wednesday at 5 Central on RadioFreeNashville.org.

Episode 78 Replay RadioFreeNashville 8 10 22 Farms and Roads

A 1968 Tull tune starts it off today with a farm set and we also hear about the Road Kill Bill that the Tennessee state legislature passed in 1999. A excerpt from an interview I did with my friend, Brant Miller, about that song from Episode 16 in 2020 leads into that song. Hot off the grill!

There’s some Todd Rundgren, Southern Pacific and Leon Russell. The music from the 60s and 70s lives on here.

You can hear Tales Vinyl Tells live at 5 pm CDT Wednesdays in Nashville at 103.7 & 107.1 FM and you can stream live anywhere in the world you have an internet connection at RadioFreeNashville.org. You can also teach Alexa to “play RadioFreeNashville” after you tell her to enable the RadioFreeNashville online skill.

Episode 77 Just hangin' around and playin' with Carole, Sly, Quicksilver and more

You know how you get used to things being where you left them? And you feel like things are normal? Well, at the moment, all is new. I’m not home in Nashville and to give a hint, let’s just say I’m near the beach and it’s warm here. I’m still putting radio shows together and they’re still playing at 5 PM Wednesdays on RadioFreeNashville.org, WRFN-LP. This one hour show today ranges from Uncle Tupelo to a great cut from Zep III. And they’re all downloadable here on StudioMillsWellness.com.

If you’d like to donate to this nonprofit, there are many listed at RadioFreeNashville.org. Thank you and hope you get off on this hour’s cuts from the ‘60s and ‘70s, mostly.

Episode 76 Happy New Year! It's 2023! Salute to Christine McVie and more

Looks like we made it to a new year. I was beginning to wonder. Last year had some good, some sad but the best thing is that is ended. I had a Covid Christmas, lost a couple really good people, like my 30 year old niece, my 62 year old friend, had a melanoma on my head and it was just a weird year. I did though get my chance to bring Tales Vinyl Tells to RadioFreeNashville and the world. Now a chance to regain momentum.

Here we have a salute to Christine McVie and her time in public performance. She had a distinctive voice, you could probably tell the songs she penned and she brought life to the rock world. She is missed. One tune she did in her time with Chicken Shack in 1968 is here and I think you’ll recognize it. All in all, here’s some great music to kick the year off with.

Episode 74 Solstice/Christmas/Hanukhah/Kwanzaa Fun

Here are some seasonal favorites and some relative sleepers, celebrating the year and all it’s victories and losses. I personally have had a relatively good year, most of it Covid-free, until the funeral of a 23-year old family friend in mid December. Oh the SARS-CoV-2 finally got me. At least I had the insight to record this show at home in case I was sick for the seasonal radio show. Lucky guess. So hear it is, my once-a-year salute to Festivus, for the rest of us, and other December observances. This wintry blast is intense. May I suggest tea or something stronger, sit around the fire and reminisce?

May you have safe and happy holidays! Thanks for your ears through the years.

Episode 73 Final 15 Million Platinum LP and so much more

Getting near the end of 2022 and definitely the end of the 29 LPs that were certified platinum 15 millions times or more. Some great music that we started counting down months ago. Can you guess what album would have stayed on the charts for the equivalent of 33 years?

We’ve also got Cat Stevens on the turntable and you’ll hear John Caffery and the Beaver Brown Band, Buffy Sainte Marie and a few more. Hope you enjoy. Feel free to share this! And have some great holidays.

Episode 72 Vince's playlist

As we age, we will see and experience more joy, the counterpart of sadness. There will be more births and more passings. It’s inevitable. This month of December, the 20th actually, I believe, in 2019, before Covid and in the nasty grips of a tyrant-wannabe president, I was encouraged by my friend, David, to put my album collection to good use and “you need to do a podcast.” Well, I did and now, 72 or so episodes later, I’m doing my expired friend, Vince, a salute to his favorite tunes, each with heart and meaning. Some were things I’ve already played here, some new additions that I most likely wouldn’t have thought of.

Here’s to Vince, who loved his tie-dyes. Raise a glass to the spirit of his kindness and love. His wife picked up his ashes recently and said they were tie-dyed. Enjoy this playlist. Send me yours.

Episode 71 Replay of the Truth Radio Show Episode 49 / Podcast #12

There’s Eric and Jimmy, Jeff and George, Fresh Garbage and plenty of noise, but good noise. This replay is #49 (I think) on StudioMillsWellness.com. Best version of Liar, IMHO. And a great cut from a triple debut set. Check out Tales Vinyl Tells Live at 5 PM Central on RadioFreeNashville.org, at 103.7 & 107.1 FM around Nashville or on https://ice23.securenetsystems.net/WRFNLP or listen later here, on Apple Podcasts or on Podbean. Download and take TVT with you!

Episode 70! Only 2 more 15 million platinum LPs to go! Who is it today?

You know I’m going to tell you on today’s show. Not a regular in the rock genre and not American by birth, but their 3rd album was a big seller. The first two were very commercially accepted. Enough tease?

A Cream cut. another super jam. I dig the long jams! Got ‘em loaded for future shows too. Suggestions? Comments?

My email: talesvinyltells@gmail.com

We saw a great documentary on PBS last night about Buffy Sainte-Marie, called Carry it on. It’s available on Passport and possibly even PBS.org. It is really good and she deserves recognition for her work to bring forth and promote the Native American culture and bring awareness to Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and the Red Dress project. Also the subject of Prime’s Alaska Daily mini series. Buffy’s Cree and they believe that on October 12, 1492, the Indians discovered Columbus. Some kind of irony.

I hope you enjoy this episode! You can listen live Wednesdays at 5 Central at 103.7 & 107.1 in Nashville, at RadioFreeNashville.org and here. The archived shows become podcasts, available here, on Apple podcasts and on Podbean.com, where the raw podcast lives, for listening and free download, so Tales Vinyl Tells can go wherever you go.

Best of the holidays to you! And I hope that 2023 will be even better than 2022. This year has had some good things about it but a lot of sad too. Keeping my head positive. Peace.

Episode 69 No time to lose! Live your life to the fullest!

That’s a weird title for this hour, I know. Let me explain. I have a friend that is like a brother, with plenty of wisdom, respect and love for me and pretty much everyone he’s met. I felt the same way about him. A really good guy. His name is Vince. He had open heart surgery earlier this week and didn’t survive the surgery. He did his life’s work in 62 years. I’m older than that and still working on it. In the future, I’m going to do a show with some of the songs he gave me when I asked him his favorites. He gave me 12. And he gave a reason he chose them in 10 words or less. The message in the list is that things are all right, nothing lasts, and with Down by the River, it’s “just because it’s a badass song.”

Right now, though, we’ve some music to hear! Animals (early), Nicolette Larson, A Marin County band named Seatrain, A super jam and so much more. Hope you enjoy. Feel free to share this, comment on it and have a good day. How can you make this world a better place?

Episode 68 Shaking with The Killer, climbing The Wall and more

There are only 3 more LPs on our list that were certified at least 15 million platinum awards and #3 today is a double album that rests in my vinyl collection and still sounds great. The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland has a big display of a brick wall honoring this artist and this release from 1979. There’s a lot of shakin’ goin’ on here today so let’s go. And please consider supporting RadioFreeNashville with a gift or make it monthly (like I do) or you can give your old car to them/us. Running or not. Episode 67 A few songs for and about women and much more

This show took me quite a while to put together. Hope it shows. There’s a recent group in the first set who had a connection to the Allman Brothers Band, there are two versions of a great Joni Mitchell song, one by Bob Dylan’s NYC guru, a song by Richie Furay, which I understand. was written for/to his wife over 50 years ago and they’re still cranking on. My friend, Brant Miller, shared his “GET OUT THE VOTE” song. Please make sure you vote! And there’s another song by a duo which was written by a Beatle using a pseudonym to test the waters to see if he could be successful without his writing partner. It’s a busy hour and Linda says its some great music, so I’ll go with that.

Please support RadioFreeNashville.org in any way you can. That website will give you some ideas. Be well! Enjoy the show! Got your popcorn?
