Episode 141: Dickey Betts salute , a sleigh ride on Nantucket? Details here

The proverbial circle of life continues to turn and we might find ourself getting in touch with our own mortality as time moves on. This week I reminisce, as I often do hearing this music. The sense input usually brings up feelings, emotions, thoughts, people, smells, tastes, sometimes things I could have done better or differently. But the music doesn’t change and that’s why I enjoy doing this podcast and radio show.
If you love the music of the 60s & 70s and want to financially support this exploration into that music, you can surf to Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. You’ll feel good when you give. (IMHO). Thank you!

There are many ways to hear these great tunes: Live on RadioFreeNashville.org Wednesdays at 5 pm Central time, all the podcasts of the radio program(many times extended versions) can be listened to anytime, anywhere at StudioMillsWellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells, on Apple podcasts, PlayerFM, iHeart and many podcast apps.

Episode 140: Another 15 million unit LP, long time since Phoenix flew and more

The ironies in life… This hour-long show just played on RadioFreeNashville.org and yesterday I was informed that Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band had passed away peacefully. He was 80. Jaimoe is the soul survivor of the original ABB now. The irony being that this particular episode started off Wednesday on radiofreenashville.org talking about the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East sessions from the summer of 1971. In fact, the second and third tunes from that session, on this episode, are from those Fillmore East fabulous concerts. If you didn't catch it during the live radio show, I was living in South Florida and was hanging out with some people I would call cool and we were doing a lot of concerts (and a fair amount of extracurricular recreational things). The concerts were affordable, like five dollars to eight dollars and we didn't mind traveling an hour to the Miami jai alai fronton to see the Allman Brothers Band live. That allowed plenty of time to get our heads right. It was a big party! It was the Fillmore East sessions! We were blown away. And in the first three months that the double album was on the market, it's sold a half million copies. I still have mine and you probably know I'm in love with it! Stormy Monday is a killer, you don't love me is a great jam and the four sides contain wall-to-wall great southern rock.

By the way, Tales Vinyl Tells plays Wednesdays at 5 PM Central time on 103.7 and 107.1 FM around Nashville and streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org and here. Replays can be heard on the StudioMillsWellness website, iheart, playerFM, Apple, Podbean.com(our RSS feed host) and most of your good podcasting apps.

I’m asking for your financial support to help me pay the bills and make this show better. Thanks to all the generous fans of this great music of the 60s & 70s. My story is at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Thank you, thank you.

All you listeners and especially you financial supporters, I want you to send me your favorite artist(s), favorite songs, memories etc. What I’d like to do is put together a special private podcast for the financial supporters. Ya dig? I asked my bud Vince to do that a few years ago and you can hear the Vince Playlist on episode 92. He’s no longer with us which makes his list that much more valued. Dig in.

Episode 139: More of the great rock from the 60s & 70s and beyond

Some summer songs, some blues from Super Session, Janis and Lee Michaels, a Gershwin treatment, an hour filled with tasty treats.

Thank you to all the sustaining givers that support this podcast. It costs to keep this going and my efforts have not gone unappreciated. You’ve heard, you’ve acted. Thank you. If you’d like to financially support this podcast, go to Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport and sign up. Join us!

Episode 137: Nostalgia: "a sentimental longing or wistful affection....

…for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations”. Yeh man! Like the 60s & 70s. Playing for change remakes songs with musicians from all over the world with sometimes odd instruments, did you enjoy Joy of Cooking? Not the book, but the band. They’re here with a few nostalgic pieces just for you and your silly nostalgia. I’m in the present and love a lot of things about the past. The Doors and Zeppelin on windowpane. Allmans and shrooms. I do hope these tunes today will make you smile and encourage you to be grateful for all you are, here, now.

Episode 136: The Vince Playlist

My friend, Vince, went in for heart surgery and I made sure to see him beforehand and wish him the best. That was the last time I saw him. They couldn't fix his heart valve. So our only choice was to mourn. Luckily, before all this, Vince told me that he had all the Tales Vinyl Tells episodes up to that time loaded into his car and he listened to them when he needed some good music that made him feel more alive. I asked him what some of his favorite tunes and artists were. He made a list of 10 songs or so and gave a little comment about pretty much every one of them and he's been gone for over a year now, I still miss him, and his comments, his choices, some of his favorites, are included in this hour of Tales Vinyl Tells. His peaceful spirit can be seen on his bench looking at the pond.

Episode 135: Another Leg in the 7 Continent Tour 2024, The Dark Continent & Europe

In this 3rd leg of the 7 Continent Tour of 2024, it’s a visit to the African continent and a jump to Europe. Music from the group Africa, Paul Simon, John Mayall and more than enough to fill your ears with an hour of the great LP cuts from the 60s and 70s mostly. Enjoy!

Thank you, financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells and of me. Your appreciation of this historic music means a lot to me. To hear tunes from 50 or more years ago still sound so good that bring back memories is a nice break from the news of today, sometimes good and sometimes awful. If you want to show your love for this project preserving this music, you can at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Deepest gratitude to you who donate.

You can be nudged (gently, by the way) of new podcasts of TVT by joining the Tales Vinyl Tells Album Club on Facebook, by following TVT on podbean.com and a whole lotta podcast apps, by emailing me at talesvinyltells@gmail.com and I’ll send you a reminder. Pretty simple. Thanks for listening!

Episode 134: How long has it been since you've heard these? Ever?

In a conversation with my friend Bonnie, she said how hearing a certain tune brought back memories of a time long ago. Who she was hanging out with, what music he was listening to (and the B-52’s Rock Lobster was driving her crazy). He played it over and over, saturating his beloved partner. But she smiled as she said some of the things she hears on Tales Vinyl Tells stir up some good memories. So there it is, folks. The album rock of the 60s & 70s was some memorable stuff. Just think about the bell bottoms, the John Lennon-type glasses with purple lens, psychedelic headbands, pungent smells in the air covered by sandalwood or nap champa incense, beads hanging in doorways instead of doors. Oh sure, it’s all very nostalgic. Great songs fill this and every hour of Tales Vinyl Tells. If you appreciate this podcast a whole lot or even just a little, you can show your love by supporting it when you check out Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. I tip my hat to all who have already signed up. Thank you, friends.

All of the 134 episodes of Tales Vinyl Tells can be heard and downloaded at StudioMillsWellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells, podbean.com and many podcasting apps. The live radio show is at 5 PM Central time Wednesdays on RadioFreeNashville.org.

The JimJam this time is Gordon Lightfoot’s Early Morning Rain, why not play along? And you’ll also catch Dhani Harrison doing a George song, a Deja vu song that shows the terrific harmonies of CSN&Y, a Reggae set with some New Zealand artists and more. Hope your ears will get happy listening.

Episode 133: 7 Continent World Tour Pt 2

It can be very fun hearing music from other countries and this 2nd leg of the 7 Continent Tour features steel drums, Brazilian samba and you know, much more.

Thanks for all your support. Find out more at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. A Great Big Thank You to all you sustainers who love what I do here.

Episode 132: World Tour 2024, previously on podcast episode 23, January 2020

This is the first leg of the 7 Continents World Tour that actually played on podcast episode 23 in January of 2020. At that time, I posted on StudioMillsWellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells, “Sure, it’s imaginary but it’s safe and healthy and has some pretty good music in it. Climb aboard! The upcoming episode or more will include visits to Brazil, Cuba, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and now you can name the other continents. Today, we hear coast to coast, to Canada and Mexico. Hope you enjoy what you hear. Remember, its in stereo so don’t be afraid to listen well and volume it up.”

Catch up on all the episodes of Tales Vinyl Tells on the above page and on most podcast apps. You could even financially support this podcast at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. With that, I say a ginormous “thank you”!

Episode 131: Artist names in songs and so much more

Ok, so it’s only two songs with artists name in them, really just one because the other doesn’t really zero in. After you listen to this one, you’ll know what I mean. But Creeque Alley does go through quite a few artists like all The Mamas and Papas, The Spoonful and iterations of them. I did also play one from Quarterflash and 1982 because it’s a cool tune. Like I need an excuse. Sade is a 2024 RnRHall of Fame nominee and picking a really good one from her is so easy. I saw her live around 2005 and she is captivating live. The helicopter SFX in the concert were so real, everyone was checking out the skies.

The JimJam is fun. Are you a willing participant? We’ll do Gordo Lightfoot’s Early Morning Rain soon. I’m heading back to Nashville in a week, after a long and wonderful month in the tropics of south Florida. Been nice and it’ll be nicer getting back home and in the home studio and RadioFreeNashville’s studio for some absolutely live(ly) shows.

Wanted to be sure to thank you who are financially supporting this podcast. I feel it’s very important to keep this music and the history of the 60s & 70s especially in the forefront. It takes time and money to buy the LPs, software and podcast service to get these shows to you. If you want more info, click this: patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. You who donate monthly are just the best. You’ve done a good thing for me. Thank you!

You can hear Tales Vinyl Tells on the internet stream as it happens on RadioFreeNashville at 5 central Wednesday here and here. Also, most podcast apps get the feed by Sunday, usually by Friday. And, you could tune in at 1am Wednesday morning (yawn) to KEUL, Girdwood, Alaska to hear the replay. It actually plays Tuesday night 10pm there, but time…..Just saying there are many ways to get your fill.

That’s a lot. Thanks for listening.

Episode 130: Another hour of great tunes from the 60s & 70s (as I say, "mostly")

There’s a tradition here at TVT to try not to repeat any tunes. Unsuccessful I’ve been but if I do repeat, there’s a high quality put on a number. That’s why we start out with two from Traffic’s John Barleycorn Must Die LP. It is a very cool musical masterpiece. And you’ll also hear Link Wray, Tracy Nelson, John Kongos and more. The ever-so-popular JIMJAM today is CSNY’s Teach Your Children, soon, so get ready for TVT!

There are many podcast apps that carry Tales Vinyl Tells, like my feed site that sends TVT out to the universe, Podbean.com, Apple, Player FM and others. Of course, our flagship, if you will, is Linda’s StudioMillsWellness.com, where we first posted the podcasts in Dec. 2019. You could also stream TVT live at 5 Central time at RadioFreeNashville.org. In fact, you should listen to them often and send some financial support their way too.

I’m very grateful that you listen and even more grateful when you financially support this cause to dig up, play and preserve that great sound and visit the lifestyle of the 1960s & 70s. If you don’t already give monthly, why not consider it? Go to patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport to find out more. I put a lot of effort and time into making this hour as uplifting, fun and entertaining as I can make it. Can you tell I need attention? Thanks y’all!

Episode 129: Tommy Talton tribute, Yes minus one (ABWH), lots more

As I kick back and enjoy the warmth of the south for a month (lucky me), the weekly show spins on. Technology, amazing thing. I’ve got some live shows being uploaded into space and reflected back to earth to RadioFreeNashville and zip zip. They magically appear at 5PM Central time Wednesdays and with a little finesse they show up here and on many podcast apps. Life in the 21st Century. Ain’t nothin’ like the ‘60s & ‘70s, is it? Hope you dig these tunes today and I hope you’ll consider being a financial supporter of Tales Vinyl Tells. Sending love to each and every one of you who are already on board. Learn more at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinytellssupport. Thank you so much!

Episode 128: Quicksilver could be a train name, but not here

This show takes us back to #9 at RadioFreeNashville. There are some train songs, sure, but the rest…….you just need to hear it. Hope you’re having a really good day. Yes, I understand there are some crappy days to balance out, but we can make it through all days, regardless.

Another JimJam is coming up soon. It’ll be Teach Your Children. Chordie, Ultimate Guitar and other sites offer free charts. Play, sing, clap, dance, whatever moves you when it’s played. Stay tuned for it.

I am curious as I put these shows together. You can hear a lot of what I was hearing back in the 60s & 70s. What were you hearing, playing on the radio, your turntable or tape device? My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com and yes, I do reply to all emails when I see them.

If you keep listening to Tales Vinyl Tells episodes and don’t already support financially, why not consider it? As little as $5 a month is a big help to pay the bills and make this podcast better. Thanks to all who have already signed on and continue to support. You can learn more at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Again, thank you!

Episode 127: It's another time to head to warmer weather for a short while, and the music plays!

Something tells me you’ll like a few of these tunes this time. Working on new episodes now in the southern studio where this great music of the 60s & 70s got into my soul as a youngster.

Btw, thanks to current and new financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells, including Gecko. You can find out more at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. A heartfelt thank you to all who monthly support this podcast. My intentions continue to bring the great album rock of our time to the ethers so anyone, any age can hear what changed the world and needs exposure and preservation. Happy listening!

Episode 126: Letting it all hang out!

Do you remember “Let it (all hang) out” by The Hombres? I dug it up and play it today. The Memphis band released that in 1967 (how old were you?) and the song has been redone by David Lee Roth and John Mellencamp among others. It was let out in the beginning of the psychedelic era. You’ll also hear my spotlight on Chris Hillman, who was a Byrd, played with The Flying Burrito Bros, Stephen Stills’ Manassas, Desert Rose Band, JD Souther and Richie Furay and had success as a solo act. He’s a player, for sure. There’s even a pair from The Beau Brummels.

Get your instrument ready for our first JimJam on this episode. We play The Stones’ Lady Jane together. The story behind this segment is in a previous blog here.

I want to say thanks to all givers, especially Gecko who has joined the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. You too can help me pay the bills to keep the tracks spinning.
Go to Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport for that opportunity.

You can also support RadioFreeNashville.org as they bring the news and programming you won’t get on most radio stations. We do this show live Wednesdays at 5 Central there. Thanks for all your generosity.

Episode 125: The Welch era with The Mac, The Who do Mose and more

Welcome back. I found out I can’t out-Spotify Spotify. There weren’t many downloads there anyway. It is pretty cool to see who is and where they are. I’m revisiting some of the early shows at RadioFreeNashville.org.

This is another replay that maybe you missed it when it first aired. I enjoy hearing them again. Here’s Badfinger off their 2nd LP, Mose Allison, Ohio, a little Peace and Quiet (they are not!) and many more.

You can still financially support this journey into that great album rock of the 60s & 70s at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. A ginormous thank you to all who already support this podcast and to you who join in.

Episode 124: Another replay for holiday break, from April '22

As we take a break to be with family and friends to rest and recharge, this replay has some cool notes to hit. There’s Shuggie’s love letter, a song that many call the first psychedelic rock tune by The Byrd’s, Luc-Ponty’s violin, of course a Doobie, soundalike The Searchers and other Fascinating Things (a bit of now and then).

I have an idea for a future show. A lot of people play or at least try to play an instrument of some kind. May be their voice. Or castanets. Or they listen and applaud (or pillow hands). I myself am playing some guitar with friends and getting a little better, overall. What I want to do is give notice a week before as to what song, one hopefully many know, we’ll play the next week. You can easily find music online and for free. On the next show, I’ll play the recorded version while I play on my guitar live and you join in, in some way or another, if you want to. Whether you listen live on RadioFreeNashville.org or catch the podcast, we can, universally play the same song, along with me or as you hear the replay. This idea came to me after my friend from my hometown, Jim Smollon told me few years ago when I played Hold My Hand by Hootie and the Blowfish, he had to grab his guitar and play that one at home while I played it on the podcast. I’d like to spread that around the world. This podcast is downloaded in over 23 countries at last count. Imagine the instruments that could be played! Maybe those playing could record their versions and email the track to me. Who knows? I might be able to mix it and hear what we get. On my friend Jim Smollon mentioned above, he had some health event and was found dead at home a while back. A real shock to his family and friends. He was a good guy. So, why don’t we call this project “The Jim Jam”? I’ll explain more as this idea gels.

HAPPY 2024! Do all you can for peace and justice, around the world!

Episode 123: Jeff Beck salute

Yardbirds’ Shapes of Things was described by some as the “first popular psychedelic rock song” ~ wikipedia. We play a lot of Beck on this one, from The Group, with Stevie Wonder and one from The Asylum Choir, whose members were Leon Russell and Marc Benno, and one cool number from Benno. Of course, there’s more on today’s replay.

It’s almost New Years as I log this episode and want to wish you and me a better year than ever before. Possible? Quite convinced it could happen. Be safe.

Listen live on RadioFreeNashville.org and on another LIVE stream at 5 PM Central time Wednesdays (Really anytime for the various programs) and you can replay all the podcasts at StudioMillsWellness.com and on many podcasting apps.

Your support is greatly appreciated. It allows me to continue to bring these great cuts from the 60s & 70s and pay the costs of doing so. Find out more at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. My heart thanks all of you who already give monthly and you can give $5 or more or give lump sums. All is/are appreciated.

Episodes 121 & 122: It's the most busiest time of the year!

This is the most important part of this blog to me today. Please make sure that your voter registration is up to date and correct in every way. Ensure you are registered to vote and that your name, address, signature etc. are correct.
This is a good place to start: Vote.gov. If you’ll read between the lines, the worst thing that could happen is if a former president returned to office. He’s a con and liar. We must prevent a potential dictator from returning to the White House. Consider writing letters and/or postcards to voters. Every vote counts! We have the power to make things better!

The time doth fly! Here you can double your fun by listening to a replay of last year’s Holiday show with some really good stuff and this most recent and new show which features two from recently departed Denny Laine, founder of The Moody Blues and also one of the three permanent members of Wings, alongside Paul and Linda. I really dig Denny’s Meant to Be after I play Go Now. There’s a newer peek into the menu at Alice’s Restaurant Massacree revisited and more. Hope you enjoy these. I’m gonna wish you The Best of the Holidays and a Tales Vinyl Tells salute to 2024.

BTW, December 19, 2019 was the release date of the first episode of TVT, so Happy 4th Birthday to Us!

Finally, if you enjoy this radio show and podcast and feel a desire to financially pitch in, you can go to Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. I thank all who have already voted “yes, I’ll help!” and to all the future contributors.

If you get a chance to listen to the “live” Tales Vinyl Tells, tune in to the stream at RadioFreeNashville.org at 5:00 PM Central time Wednesdays. If you’re in Nashville, you might listen on FM radio at 103.7 or 107.1. As always, thanks for listening. Email your thoughts/favorites/questions to TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. Happy Holidays and Happy 2024.
