Episode 127: It's another time to head to warmer weather for a short while, and the music plays!

Something tells me you’ll like a few of these tunes this time. Working on new episodes now in the southern studio where this great music of the 60s & 70s got into my soul as a youngster.

Btw, thanks to current and new financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells, including Gecko. You can find out more at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. A heartfelt thank you to all who monthly support this podcast. My intentions continue to bring the great album rock of our time to the ethers so anyone, any age can hear what changed the world and needs exposure and preservation. Happy listening!

Episode 126: Letting it all hang out!

Do you remember “Let it (all hang) out” by The Hombres? I dug it up and play it today. The Memphis band released that in 1967 (how old were you?) and the song has been redone by David Lee Roth and John Mellencamp among others. It was let out in the beginning of the psychedelic era. You’ll also hear my spotlight on Chris Hillman, who was a Byrd, played with The Flying Burrito Bros, Stephen Stills’ Manassas, Desert Rose Band, JD Souther and Richie Furay and had success as a solo act. He’s a player, for sure. There’s even a pair from The Beau Brummels.

Get your instrument ready for our first JimJam on this episode. We play The Stones’ Lady Jane together. The story behind this segment is in a previous blog here.

I want to say thanks to all givers, especially Gecko who has joined the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. You too can help me pay the bills to keep the tracks spinning.
Go to Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport for that opportunity.

You can also support RadioFreeNashville.org as they bring the news and programming you won’t get on most radio stations. We do this show live Wednesdays at 5 Central there. Thanks for all your generosity.

Episode 125: The Welch era with The Mac, The Who do Mose and more

Welcome back. I found out I can’t out-Spotify Spotify. There weren’t many downloads there anyway. It is pretty cool to see who is and where they are. I’m revisiting some of the early shows at RadioFreeNashville.org.

This is another replay that maybe you missed it when it first aired. I enjoy hearing them again. Here’s Badfinger off their 2nd LP, Mose Allison, Ohio, a little Peace and Quiet (they are not!) and many more.

You can still financially support this journey into that great album rock of the 60s & 70s at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. A ginormous thank you to all who already support this podcast and to you who join in.

Episode 124: Another replay for holiday break, from April '22

As we take a break to be with family and friends to rest and recharge, this replay has some cool notes to hit. There’s Shuggie’s love letter, a song that many call the first psychedelic rock tune by The Byrd’s, Luc-Ponty’s violin, of course a Doobie, soundalike The Searchers and other Fascinating Things (a bit of now and then).

I have an idea for a future show. A lot of people play or at least try to play an instrument of some kind. May be their voice. Or castanets. Or they listen and applaud (or pillow hands). I myself am playing some guitar with friends and getting a little better, overall. What I want to do is give notice a week before as to what song, one hopefully many know, we’ll play the next week. You can easily find music online and for free. On the next show, I’ll play the recorded version while I play on my guitar live and you join in, in some way or another, if you want to. Whether you listen live on RadioFreeNashville.org or catch the podcast, we can, universally play the same song, along with me or as you hear the replay. This idea came to me after my friend from my hometown, Jim Smollon told me few years ago when I played Hold My Hand by Hootie and the Blowfish, he had to grab his guitar and play that one at home while I played it on the podcast. I’d like to spread that around the world. This podcast is downloaded in over 23 countries at last count. Imagine the instruments that could be played! Maybe those playing could record their versions and email the track to me. Who knows? I might be able to mix it and hear what we get. On my friend Jim Smollon mentioned above, he had some health event and was found dead at home a while back. A real shock to his family and friends. He was a good guy. So, why don’t we call this project “The Jim Jam”? I’ll explain more as this idea gels.

HAPPY 2024! Do all you can for peace and justice, around the world!

Episode 123: Jeff Beck salute

Yardbirds’ Shapes of Things was described by some as the “first popular psychedelic rock song” ~ wikipedia. We play a lot of Beck on this one, from The Group, with Stevie Wonder and one from The Asylum Choir, whose members were Leon Russell and Marc Benno, and one cool number from Benno. Of course, there’s more on today’s replay.

It’s almost New Years as I log this episode and want to wish you and me a better year than ever before. Possible? Quite convinced it could happen. Be safe.

Listen live on RadioFreeNashville.org and on another LIVE stream at 5 PM Central time Wednesdays (Really anytime for the various programs) and you can replay all the podcasts at StudioMillsWellness.com and on many podcasting apps.

Your support is greatly appreciated. It allows me to continue to bring these great cuts from the 60s & 70s and pay the costs of doing so. Find out more at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. My heart thanks all of you who already give monthly and you can give $5 or more or give lump sums. All is/are appreciated.

Episodes 121 & 122: It's the most busiest time of the year!

This is the most important part of this blog to me today. Please make sure that your voter registration is up to date and correct in every way. Ensure you are registered to vote and that your name, address, signature etc. are correct.
This is a good place to start: Vote.gov. If you’ll read between the lines, the worst thing that could happen is if a former president returned to office. He’s a con and liar. We must prevent a potential dictator from returning to the White House. Consider writing letters and/or postcards to voters. Every vote counts! We have the power to make things better!

The time doth fly! Here you can double your fun by listening to a replay of last year’s Holiday show with some really good stuff and this most recent and new show which features two from recently departed Denny Laine, founder of The Moody Blues and also one of the three permanent members of Wings, alongside Paul and Linda. I really dig Denny’s Meant to Be after I play Go Now. There’s a newer peek into the menu at Alice’s Restaurant Massacree revisited and more. Hope you enjoy these. I’m gonna wish you The Best of the Holidays and a Tales Vinyl Tells salute to 2024.

BTW, December 19, 2019 was the release date of the first episode of TVT, so Happy 4th Birthday to Us!

Finally, if you enjoy this radio show and podcast and feel a desire to financially pitch in, you can go to Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. I thank all who have already voted “yes, I’ll help!” and to all the future contributors.

If you get a chance to listen to the “live” Tales Vinyl Tells, tune in to the stream at RadioFreeNashville.org at 5:00 PM Central time Wednesdays. If you’re in Nashville, you might listen on FM radio at 103.7 or 107.1. As always, thanks for listening. Email your thoughts/favorites/questions to TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. Happy Holidays and Happy 2024.

Episode 120: How does an artist come up with the hook that just grabs you?

Well, they did it again. Spot-to-fy pulled episode 119. Their story was “this podcast service is not intended to be a music distribution tool.”

I’ve been saying all along, for 4 years now, that Tales Vinyl Tells is only for the promotion of great music and the artists that make that music and lyrics. I guess if Spot-to-fy has to pay a tenth of a cent per play, then so be it. They want me to get hooked up with a distributor. Not so sure I’m gonna do it. As you’ll see, I’ll be a bit more vague with my titles and see if that makes a difference. Apple podcasts hasn’t said squat.

Ahhh. Chill now, BH. This is a really fun show this time. From Beatles magic to the blues of Rory Gallagher, I’m highlighting some very captivating (I think anyway) guitar intros. Sure, you’ve heard Heart’s intro to Crazy on You, but isn’t that really listenable? I hope you get off on this episode. If you celebrate December holidays or personal days of celebration, I hope it’s your best yet. Coupon good for all year.

Have you considered joining other Tales Vinyl Tells listeners and becoming a monthly contributor? Details are at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Thank you, those who have said “yes!”. And thank you!

You can enjoy the album rock of the 60s and 70s with Tales Vinyl Tells at StudioMillsWellness.com and most podcasting apps.

Episode 119: PCOC Day 6! Another New Days Festival with two more great bands!

It’s another fun day here at TVT with a huge turnout for The Doors and Grateful Dead. Lucky you’re going to hear it on this podcast. It’s more than a 1/2 hour longer than the live radio show on RadioFreeNashville.org. That live radio show is at 5 PM Central time on Wednesdays. The podcasts are longer and include a way you can show your love and appreciation for Tales Vinyl Tells by supporting with a monthly contribution to this music of the 60s and 70s by surfing to Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport.

Thanks to all who already give monthly and I hope you’ll join them. Enjoy the concert! It’s Day 6 of the Post Covid Outdoor Concert series!

All episodes of Tales Vinyl Tells can be heard at StudioMillsWellness.com on the podcast tab and on a whole bunch of podcast apps.

Episode 118: Indian Summer, RIP Rudolph, Petty/Campbell Now and Then, Health Workers Salute

Didn’t get no notice from Spot-to-fy since last time I posted. Maybe they were just being sensitive and not getting any attention. Whatever. We’ll see what happens this week and see if I can care any less.

This time we salute all health care workers and providers, including those on what some call “the fringes”, complementary medicine, like osteopathy, acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, reflexology and reiki, from here.

As we’ve been doing the past couple episodes, we hearing artists before and after larger success. Tom Petty/Heartbreakers/Mike Campbell share 3. This time of year we know winter’s coming and it’s nice to get some warmth to light our fire to prep for cold weather. It’s Indian summer. Nice tunes named that. You can hear the radio show live on RadioFreeNashville.org at 5PM Wednesdays and the podcast of the radio hour at StudioMillsWellness.com and most podcasting apps anytime.

Your financial support of Tales Vinyl Tells tells me you like what you hear here. I’m so grateful for your generosity. There are expenses. Give as little as $5 a month or as much as you want to help me continue to bring the great album rock of the ‘60s and ‘70s. More at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Thank you so much!

NEXT WEEK IT’S DAY 6 OF THE POST COVID OUTDOOR CONCERTS SERIES WITH THE DOORS, AND GRATEFUL DEAD. PCOC, THE PEACOCK, CELEBRATING THE NEW DAYS AFTER-PANDEMIC. THE PODCAST HAS EXTENDED PERFORMANCES!

Episode 117: One from a surfer band's drummer, a huge selling band from Massachusetts and more

Is it possible to outsmart the podcast app? I had a recent podcast removed from Spot-to-fy I’d say because a few bands’ names were in the episode title. It was the Little Feat and Pink Floyd PCOC a few weeks ago. I’ll let you know the results. Like that app is so generous paying the artists. Screw them.

Hope this episode flips your switch. Listening with headphones is a +.

Episode 116: Change is the only constant in life. Last Fab Four song?

About a month from this post Tales Vinyl Tells will celebrate being a podcast for four years. 116 episodes deep, some replays, truth be told, and over 1,000 unique songs played, here’s another hour of the great album rock of the 60s and 70s! Wasn’t that dramatic? I do want to say thanks for listening and share my hope for many more episodes/years/spins/replays. You can experience the real live radio show at 5 PM Wednesdays on RadioFreeNashville.org. That’s the best listening experience I think. Those of you in Canada, The Philippines, New Zealand get better reception that way. Also, thank you to all you supporters of TVT through the Patron Program at Podbean.com. I appreciate each of you greatly. The link again is Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport.

This episode is about change, a song that took 44 years to put together (Beatles) and a salute to Ed King. You’ll recognize his sound. Did you ever have a marble vinyl? More on these notes in this episode of Tales Vinyl Tells.

Episode 115: Live Little Feat and Pink Floyd! It’s Peacock, PCOC #5!

Fall’s in full swing here in Music City, Nashville. The colors of fall are all but faded and we’ve had a few overnight temps cold enough to bring our brass monkeys in. And Indian summer is around Nov. 11, give or take and this episode with The Peacock rocks and could well warm your innards and extremes if you’re dancing to the tunes. It’s Peacock #5, The New Days Festival with live Little Feat and Pink Floyd. Lucky you! You get an extended version of the concert and I hope you dig what you hear.

If you really do dig what we play here, just consider being a monthly supporter of Tales Vinyl Tells. You can give $5 a month, you can give a one-timer of $10,000. Both are equally generous in my eyes. Of course, you can name your gift. You can read my story and my ask at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Thank you.

Catch Tales Vinyl Tells live on the radio on RadioFreeNashville.org and on FM in Nashville at 103.7 &107.1. Replays and downloads are available free of charge at most podcast apps, including Apple, Spotify, Google and more. Again, thanks and I hope we can build our mutual gratitude higher than ever.

Episode 114: All new, Bowie, Fripp, Crusaders, Heroes, Friends and being famous

We are probably all, in my opinion anyway, a friend, maybe even a hero to someone but we can’t all be famous. And that may well be a good thing. In the meanwhile, we can keep the fires burning, the love-light burning and the circle turning. Maybe even keep the desires yearning.

Here are some memory-joggers, just some of the great music we had and heard on LP from the 60s and 70s.

If you want to support this podcast, my story is at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Thanks for listening and contributing.

Episode 113: Spotlight on Rod Argent with some Beatles, a great Steely Dan tune and more

Back in the spring this was a new show on RadioFreeNashville, May to be exact. Be careful though, there might be Zombies here! It’s OK though. It’s scary good stuff!

Thanks to my peeps who have offered to fund this podcast. It takes money and time to bring the great music from the albums of the 60s and 70s to you and I want to thank you to you in Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, to name a few, that have said “yes”. If you want to know more about supporting Tales Vinyl Tells, go to patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport for information.

Tales Vinyl Tells is on the radio Wednesdays at 5 PM Central and can be heard on 103.7 & 107.1 FM, better yet, stream it live on RadioFreeNashville.org and also at https://ice23.securenetsystems.net/WRFNLP.

Episode 112: A year ago, the world was much different, my life/your life. And we counted down LPs.

Chris Hillman played in many bands of this age in music: The Byrds, Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, Flying Burrito Brothers, Stephen Stills’ Manassas and the Desert Rose Band. He was always working to deepen the SouthWest rock mix where country, folk, rock, bluegrass and gospel meet and mix. Sometime check his debut solo LP. Pretty darn good! We do have a few from his bands today. There’s Jo Mama who have backed Carole King especially and more.

Let me take a moment to say thank you to all of you who have shown your love and financial support for this podcast, Tales Vinyl Tells. Thanks, guys. Your support means everything to me as I strive to cover the expenses that it takes to put this podcast together and to make it better. You can hear the show as it airs Wednesday at 5 PM Central at RadioFreeNashville.org. Minding my manners, as always, I say Thank You for all you do!

Episode 111: Top 3 albums with a stage light on Pink Floyd.

Recently on Tales Vinyl Tells I counted down most of the 29 albums of all time that sold more than 15 million units. An LP counted as one, a single as a half sale. This time it’s a focus on 2 by Pink Floyd that were big sellers not to mention they were captivating of the ears and brains. These are culturally significant in my opinion. And there’s more of the great album cuts from the 60s and 70s.

You can hear Tales Vinyl Tells as it happens on RadioFreeNashville.org and on radio on 103.7 & 107.1 at 5 PM Wednesdays. Replays can be heard on StudioMillsWellness.com and on many podcast apps.

I’m so appreciative of you listening and of those who have chosen to financially support this podcast. If you’re interested in supporting Tales Vinyl Tells, check out patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. And Thank You!

Episode 110: There are some songs that just need to be played together, here

And I’m not saying that I do it right here, but I hear a tune sometimes, not often, but I hear a companion tune. There are two of them in this show. Can you find them? My email is talesvinyltells.com. Just curious if you’re aware of them. Ok. Derek and the Dominoes was amazing, recorded in the brand new Criterion Studios in Miami, Fla. Our lead off jams like crazy. Have you heard the Canadian Beatles? We have some Klaatu. What a name! At 17 is an aural beauty. And Poco finishes us with the title cut from Crazy Eyes. It’s a pretty good tune.

I want to say thank you to my financial supporters and invite you to join them at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. How can I make this adventure into the great music of the 60s and 70s better? I’d like to hear your ideas, questions and feedback. Email me at talesvinyltells@gmail.com. Thanks for listening!

Episode 109: Farewell to Jimmy Buffett, artists in "before" groups and more, of course.

I stand corrected about Jimmy Buffett’s success, not to mention his impact on our culture. I mentioned on the radio show and podcast the numbers of recordings. Here are the facts: 32 studio albums, 11 compilation albums, 14 live LPs, one soundtrack LP and 67 singles! Jimmy was a very busy guy. He brought out the “party” in people. He also got melancholic. Like He Went to Paris. He wrote after meeting a musician, a one-armed veteran of the Spanish Civil War. It was a song he rarely played live and found out that Bob Dylan liked the song, and it was later recorded by Waylon Jennings and Doug Supernaw. Thank you, Jimmy and if you don’t mind, save us a place in the next room.

There’s also a new journey we’re on to hear where some successful artists were before they gained their star. Tom Petty’s Mudcrutch, Ed King’s Strawberry Alarm Clock and Skynyrd and so on. This time it’s Gerry Rafferty, with 3 different groups. Good stuff. Fairly historical. Hope you like. Sure, there’s a boatload of great LP cuts from the 60s and 70s.

Your financial support of Tales Vinyl Tells is so appreciated from all who have already signed up and those who will in the future. Maybe today? Check out my story at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. Hat tip and thanks to each and all of you for listening/reading/sharing.

Episode 108: Day 4 of The Peacock-PCOC-Post Covid Outdoor Concert Series- shorter pt 2

The entire hour and 45 minute Day 4 is on episode 107 and has Johnny Winter And with Ric Derringer, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Fleetwood Mac. This is part 2 of the Day 4 radio show from RadioFreeNashville Sept 13. Featuring some of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers set, a song with Stevie Nicks and a bunch from Fleetwood Mac’s performance that imaginary day. It’s a rockin’ good time!

If you like what you’ve been hearing on Tales Vinyl Tells and want more (gimme more, gimme more, they cheered!), I invite you to support this podcast with your generosity. You can get the details at patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. I’m so grateful to all of you who have shown your appreciation and support. Thank you.

Episode 107: My lucky number and OUR lucky day! It's Peacock Day 4! Winter, Petty, Mac!!

The Post Covid Outdoor Concert Series continues today with the complete Day 4 performances from Johnny Winter And, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the great Fleetwood Mac! It’s over an hour and forty minutes and is still too short. You might want some volume on this baby because it does in fact rock! A little bit of backstory and his-story makes this one of the funnest episodes to date. I hope you love this one.

Do you find yourself looking forward to the next episode after you just finished one? Do you dig the great album cuts from the 60s an 70s that we played or haven’t yet played? I want to continue doing what I’ve been doing and with your help, it’ll be more fun. I’m looking to you for financial support to pay expenses for this podcast and to carry on in the future. You can find out more at PATRON.PODBEAN.COM/TALESVINYLTELLSSUPPORT. THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE JOINED THE TVT TEAM WITH YOUR VOTE “YES”.

Now, PCOC, The Peacock, The New Days Festival Day 4! Now on stage!
